2017 has felt like something of a turning point for the connectivity industries. As the hype mists start to clear, the opportunities and challenges associated with 5G have begun to reveal themselves, and what looked like another step on the endless road of wireless iterations starts to shape up into something much more interesting.

There’s no doubt mobile operators have a big role to play in shaping the 5G landscape, but it’s no longer clear that the MNO’s voice will dominate. While the big beasts of the Internet grab the headlines, it’s interesting to note that it’s business and industry that are starting to call the shots, set the requirements and nudge the direction in which the 5G vision will eventually resolve.

This is both exciting and challenging. Service providers and enterprise have a long history of misunderstanding one another – they focus, quite rightly, on their respective industries; they have very different agendas; they often struggle to find a common language. And over the past 12 months, this is where Real Wireless has had a key role in helping to match technologies and roadmaps with enterprise requirements and commercial ambitions. Our job has been precisely to see beyond the hype to support both service providers and enterprises to better understand the benefits that can be realised for them by 5G and, in turn, in making the right investment decisions.

In recent weeks, we’ve had a packed agenda of speaking slots, panels and conferences. We thought it would be a good way to end the year by sharing some thoughts that came out of these events. Have a great holiday season and look forward to working with many of you in the year ahead.

C-RAN – all still up in the air?

C-RAN seems to have been a long time coming. I first started exploring the potential of C-RAN back in 2007. Since then there’s been a great deal of industry talk and thousands of pages of standards describing dozens of C-RAN architectures. And I’m still waiting. Cloud...

Can Satcoms at sea improve operations on land?

We write a lot about the needs of industry and how LTE, Wi-Fi, DAS and 5G, incorporated into a private network, could improve logistics and security and underpin just-in-time operations for airports, sea-ports, factories, stadiums, malls or local government. But what...

Connected vehicles: The long and winding road

The automotive industry’s goal was for every new vehicle to be connected by 2022. Now, less than 18 months out, things are more or less on track. But on track for what? M2M vehicle connectivity is already widely available.  This enables a vehicle to be connected to an...
