The 5G-MoNArch Hamburg Port testbed has won the Industry Partnership Award at the Global Mobile Awards 2019 (GLOMOs). The award was presented at a glittering ceremony as part of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The award recognised the work of Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), Deutsche Telekom & Nokia for the first large scale industrial commercial 5G trial at the third largest container port in Europe. The three partners deployed a 5G network in the 8,000-hectare Port of Hamburg originally as a proof of concept testbed and now as an operational network.
The implementation is being carried out under the auspices of the 5G-MoNArch (5G Mobile Network Architecture) project led by Nokia, in which Real Wireless is a partner. The 5G network architecture is the only option for managing a complex infrastructure more efficiently and effectively than running expensive fibre. Implemented use cases range from secure automated port operations to traffic management via connected, intelligent transportation systems.
Julie Bradford, Managing Consultant at Real Wireless said: “We are delighted for our partners and very privileged to be working alongside them on the 5G-MoNArch project. Real Wireless supported the demo of the Hamburg testbed at MWC19 and the response from visitors to the stand was extremely positive. This award is richly deserved by the HPA, DT and Nokia Hamburg testbed team.”
Simon Fletcher, Chief Technology Officer at Real Wireless said: “Real Wireless is developing the 5G use cases and business cases for the 5G-MoNArch project and is delighted to be working closely with partners such as the award winners DT, HPA and Nokia. We are working to understand the commercial and wider economic case for extending mobile networks (via network slicing as provided in 5G-MoNArch) to provide reliable and resilient industrial wireless services as would be needed in environments like Hamburg Port. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
