The future of connected driving

Real world 5G connectivity for the future of driving

The AutoAir Consortium was recently recognised in the 5G Realised awards, being awarded the accolade of ‘Most Innovative Use of 5G Technology.
The project concluded with the publication of the phase two report, which can be downloaded from the form below.

Millbrook Proving Ground played host to the AutoAir Summit earlier this year, launching the new 5G testbed for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV). The testbed allows demonstration of constantly connected vehicles, regardless of the speed of travel – something that is vital for the future of CAVs.

With Real Wireless’ suite of tools and planning expertise, we were able to recommend the precise location for all cells around the testbed track, enabling 4K video streaming between fast moving vehicles.

The final report from the AutoAir Consortium is now available to download. The project explores the concept of the hyper-dense neutral host network where a number of easy-to-deploy small cells are installed in close proximity to the road or trackside. The key findings and business case analyses for both road and rail are also laid out. Fill in your details to download the report.

Shaping the future of connected and autonomous vehicles

For many years, the media has talked about the future of connected vehicles and the technology necessary to take fully connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) from a dream to a reality. Real Wireless is proud to be part of the AutoAir consortium, helping to deliver the technology that will make that reality possible.

By creating a new 5G testbed at the world-famous Millbrook Proving Ground, the consortium demonstrated through the use of both 60 GHz mmWave and sub 6 GHz networks, the ability to connect vehicles moving at high speed and stream data between them and with fixed infrastructure.

The AutoAir analysis primarily focused on road connectivity and the path to increased capacity using infrastructure sharing to meet future demand. The implications of these principles were also considered for rail deployments. When working with clients in the road sector, we’ve recently seen yet more new connectivity options and use cases emerging. We are finding the majority of applications comfortably fit within the capabilities of a more flexible connectivity platform, tipping the balance towards a 4G/5G evolutionary path and away from ITS-G5.

For Rail, our focus with clients in recent months has been on improving the understanding regarding reliability of voice services for passengers on various lines and rolling stock in the UK. At the same time, we’ve looked at how data services will benefit, with sharing of infrastructure as a core consideration. Methods for sharing of infrastructure are increasingly becoming of interest in both the Road and Rail environments; something that is a very welcome development.

Real Wireless is recognised as the world’s leading independent wireless advisory firm. With experience spanning transportation and connected places such as ports and stadia, Real Wireless and its digital infrastructure advisory service works with governments, regulators, end users, vendors and network operators to help plan the future.

Rail connectivity: don’t reinvent the wheel

Why should we improve wireless connectivity along transport corridors? And how? The answer to the first question isn’t difficult. Good connectivity is no longer a selling point; it’s an expectation. End users don’t know the complexities involved in guaranteeing a...

We’re back to talking HetNets

Users buy experiences. And in today’s continually connected world, connectivity is an experience we seek out and cannot do without. We want instant access to online information and services, whether at home, out and about or on the move. Connectivity is increasingly...

Making the case for 26 GHz

As some of you know, Real Wireless has had some excellent news in the past few days. The UK’s Spectrum Policy Forum (SPF) has awarded its 26 GHz study contract to the Real Wireless team. This is an enormous vote of confidence in our abilities, in particular because it...
