Our 5G testbed

Our two-year participation in Europe’s 5G-MoNArch project was both challenging and an exciting opportunity to examine 5G concepts – in particular, network slicing – into practise. Until you visit a port, it’s difficult to appreciate the scale of operations and challenges that need to be overcome to deliver robust connectivity.This short video from the Port of Hamburg gives a taste of the environment in which we worked.

Expert and independent advice for port authorities

In 2019, Real Wireless was instrumental in delivering the results of the two-year European Commission funded project, 5G-MoNArch, tasked with looking at how best to transform the connected infrastructure of the Port of Hamburg in Germany.

Seaports are playing catch-up with the large transport & logistics players in exploring the benefits of smart connectivity.

Wireless can offer connectivity for complex infrastructure as efficiently and effectively as fibre but potentially at much lower cost. Pulling cable across large buildings and port environments can be time consuming, disruptive and expensive. Tethering autonomous cranes will reduce flexibility in the port. Wireless is an obvious choice for enhanced port connectivity. But it also makes new demands, 

These demands necessitate new network architectures enabling delivery of ultra-low latency and improved coverage and a cloud solution using technology optimised for edge computing.
