London May 2017 – Real Wireless experts have provided deployment advice and modelling to support a project to install 4G mobile small cells across the Square Mile.

The initiative will lay the foundations for 5G deployment in London.

Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Ltd (CTIL) has won a 15 year concession to market the Corporation’s assets to mobile operators to support the deployment of small cells. This type of network densification is necessary to expand the existing coverage and enable high bandwidth services such as video-calling and video on demand throughout The City of London. The City has over 400,000 daily commuters and 5 million annual visitors – so ensuring they remain connected and laying the foundations for future Smart City initiatives were key requirements of this procurement. Such large peaks of demand present challenges for mobile operators and City management

Real Wireless worked as part of CTIL’s bid team to provide technical advice on small cells, including deployment, coverage modelling, capacity requirements, backhaul and the long-term use of small cells in the City.

John Okas, Strategic Wireless Business Consultant at Real Wireless said: “This was a complex project and one in which all partners have worked hard to deliver the very best solutions for the City of London. We played a small but significant role by providing expert advice to CTIL on the technical aspects of small cells and using our unique modelling tools we provided the best coverage and deployment advice available. The Corporation was keen to ensure that they improved coverage and capacity today but also wanted to lay plans for the evolution to 5G over the period of the concession to ensure that the City continued to provide world class digital infrastructure.  Our extensive involvement in various 5G projects allowed us to provide such advice and our coverage modelling gave all parties an indication of how many of the Corporation’s assets could be used for small cell deployments over the life of this concession. We know that the deployment of 4G small cells within the square mile will pave the way for future roll out of 5G – and in the meantime, deliver huge benefits to people living, working and visiting this area.”

Can Satcoms at sea improve operations on land?

We write a lot about the needs of industry and how LTE, Wi-Fi, DAS and 5G, incorporated into a private network, could improve logistics and security and underpin just-in-time operations for airports, sea-ports, factories, stadiums, malls or local government. But what...

Connected vehicles: The long and winding road

The automotive industry’s goal was for every new vehicle to be connected by 2022. Now, less than 18 months out, things are more or less on track. But on track for what? M2M vehicle connectivity is already widely available.  This enables a vehicle to be connected to an...
